Difficulties experienced by Vietnamese lecturers teaching IELTS speaking at university level and some suggested solutions

InVietnam nowadays, theVietnamNationalUniversity,Hanoi in particular, a new standard for English proficiency is set; that is the required overall score of 5.0 on the IELTS or equivalent. Thus, many universities emphasize the development of IELTS skills. While efforts have been made to teach the four macro skills of writing, reading, listening in many language colleges, far less attention is paid to teach necessary techniques to develop good IELTS speaking skill. To bridge the gap, this paper aims at exploring the difficulties experienced by lecturer teaching IELTS speaking to Vietnamese students at university level and to find out the solutions regarding this issue. Through a questionnaire survey on 189 lecturers and 92 students of IELTS preparation courses, the study found that lecturers have encountered numerous difficulties when teaching IELTS speaking to Vietnamese students such as error correction, overcoming nervousness, using the cue card, helping students improve their critical thinking in answering abstract issues. The study also explores lecturers’ perceptions of the difficulties when teaching students IETLS speaking as well as the factors that help learners to develop their speaking skills. Students’ questionnaire also helps to explore the lecturers’ difficulties from the students’ point of view. Suggested solutions for each problem are given by experienced lecturers through interviews. This work hopes to both contribute to the existing body of IELTS research as well as to pave the way for future studies in this field.

Xây dựng quy trình định lượng flurbiprofen trong viên nénbao phim 100 mg bằng phương pháp sắc ký lỏng hiệu năng cao ghép đầu dò diode-array

Nguyễn, Thị Thanh Bình Đặng, Ngọc Anh Trần, Mai Anh Nguyễn, Thanh Hải Trong nghiên cứu này chúng tôi đã xây dựng được quy trình định lượng flurbiprofen trong viên nén bao phim 100 mg bằng phương pháp sắc ký lỏng hiệu năng cao ghép đầu dò diode-array theo hướng dẫn của Cơ quan quản lý thuốc châu Âu và Hội nghị quốc tế về hài hoà hoá các yêu cầu kỹ thuật để đăng ký dược phẩm sử dụng trên người. Pha tĩnh được sử dụng là cột silica gel pha đảo C8 (5 μm, 120 Å, 4,6×150 mm), pha động là hỗn hợp acetonitril : nước : acid acetic băng với tỷ lệ 65 : 32,5 : 2,5, tốc độ dòng 1 ml/phút. Mẫu được tiêm với thể tích 10 µl, thời gian sắc ký 8 phút, bước sóng phát hiện 247 nm. Thời gian lưu của flurbiprofen là 3,73 phút. Kết quả thực nghiệm cho thấy trong khoảng nồng độ từ 2 - 20 μg/ml, có sự tương quan tuyến tính chặt chẽ giữa diện tích pic y (mAU.min) và nồng độ dung dịch x (μg/ml) theo phương trình y = 0,680x với hệ số xác định R2 = 0,9993. BTEX pollution caused by motorcycles in the megacity of HoChiMinh

Tran, Thi Ngoc Lan Pham, Anh Minh Monitoring of benzene, toluene and xylenes (BTEX) was conducted along with traffic counts at 17 roadside sites in urban areas of HoChiMinh. Toluene was the most abundant substance, followed byp,m-xylenes, benzene,o-xylene and ethylbenzene. The maximum observed hour-average benzene concentration was 254μg/m3 . Motorcycles contributed to 91% of the traffic fleet. High correlations among BTEX species, between BTEX concentrations and the volume of on-road motorcycles, and between inter-species ratios in air and in gasoline indicate the motorcycle-exhaust origin of BTEX species. Cultural Differences: A Barrier to Native English Teachers in English as a Foreign Language Contexts

Võ, Thị Hoàng Yến When teachers and students come from different cultures, many perplexities can arise. These can be due to different social positions of teachers and students in the two societies, to differences in expected teacher/student and student/student interaction, or to differences in the relevance of the curricula of the two societies (Hofstede). Therefore, it has been assumed that a teacher must be aware of socio-cultural differences to operate effectively in the classroom. This paper begins with cultural aspects of individualist and collectivist countries and influences of collectivist cultures in EFL classrooms. It also shows a number of cultural explanations of communication avoidance in EFL classrooms, especially inChina,JapanandVietnam. Finally, the paper presents some difficulties native speaking teachers encounter when teaching English in EFL contexts and potential solutions to these difficulties.
